One of my favorite techniques that I’ve learned to free up the shoulders is something we do to begin each of our yoga sessions in Balanced Yoga’s Hatha class. While seated, grab the left trapezius muscle (muscle on your back between shoulder and neck) with your right hand. Let the left arm hang relaxed to the floor. Now with the movement coming from the tip of the left shoulder gently move the shoulder up and down (maybe a quarter of an inch in each direction) for several moments. Next, make very small circles with the left shoulder (while still holding the trapezius muscle). The idea is to immobilize the trapezius muscle. Release the trapezius and roll both shoulders, noticing any difference between the two. Perform the same movement on the right side.
